This small walled border town is located about 10 km south of Monsaraz, between the Alqueva dam, which it overlooks, and the Spanish border. Its castle, which houses the matrix church (17th century), dominates the village. It was hit during the famous earthquake of 1755. Often neglected by tourists who prefer Monsaraz, Mourão is a pretty little town with white houses decorated with Moorish chimneys, quite unusual in Alentejo. In summer, Mourão organizes many events and at the end of January, you can attend the procession during the festival of Nossa Senhora das Candeias.
