In Portuguese, alqueive means fallow land, deserted land... Reference to the very dry soil of the area, a major obstacle to the development of the region. A few decades ago, it was therefore imagined to build a dam on the Guadiana River, in order to irrigate the soil and facilitate agriculture. This was the famous Alqueva dam and its artificial lake, now one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, both in volume and in area. It stretches like a small inland sea from one hill to the other, bathing the valleys and coves as far as the eye can see, leaving here and there a few islands, as if one were sailing in a Pacific lagoon. Spectacular..
