With 5,900 inhabitants, Vidigueira is a small, quiet town in the Alentejo. Its development was mainly due to its wine production, especially from the 15th to the 19th century. Vidigueira is today the name of a Region of Controlled Origin. The name of the town is also linked to the great explorer Vasco da Gama (1469-1524), who received the title of Count of Vidigueira in 1519. The Casa da Vidigueira, founded at that time, has remained in the same family until today. In the town's clock tower, the hours are rung by a bell bearing the Cross of Christ and the Gama family coat of arms engraved with the date 1520.
