Reguengos means "king's lands". This part of the Alentejo region has been inhabited since the 16th century. However, the two municipalities of Reguengos and Monsaraz only joined forces in 1838. The region's granite and schist soils and climate are particularly well-suited to vine-growing, and the wine produced here is of the highest quality. In the town center, the 19th-century neo-Gothic matrix church displays a beautiful play of colors, thanks to the harmonious combination of stone and lime tones. Also worth a visit is the museum dedicated to José Mestre Batista (1940-1985), a famous bullfighter born in the parish of Campo.
