Albufeira is the seaside resort par excellence and the busiest city in the Algarve. In summer, its population triples or even quadruples. We have to go back to the time of the Romans to find the traces of the foundation of Albufeira. Very quickly, it developed an economy linked to fishing. But as in the rest of the Algarve, it could not resist the invasion of the Moors in the 8th century, who changed its name from Batlum to Al-Buhera. The wall that protects the city dates from this period. The third significant period of its development took place from the 16th century, at the beginning of the cycle of the great maritime discoveries.
