Today a charming and peaceful town, the last capital of the Moors in the Algarve competed with Lisbon for power until the 14th century. Its artistic and cultural activity earned it the title of cradle of Arab-Andalusian poetry. Of this occupation, there are no traces left: the destructive rage of the Christian conquerors only spared the castle and its fortifications. This imposing medieval red brick castle was restored in the 1940s. From the impregnable ramparts, one can enjoy a superb view of the city and the banks of the river Arade. The incredible gothic cathedral was built on the site of a former mosque.
