The pilgrimage route separates from the main road from Ponteferrada to Lugo at the Pedrafita do Cebreiro pass, which culminates at 1,109 metres. It then leaves Castilla y León to enter Galicia. This almost deserted place saw hundreds of English soldiers die of hunger and cold during the retreat of Sr. John Moore to A Coruña in 1809. In such a desolate landscape, there are few monuments except the buildings built in the Middle Ages to accommodate pilgrims: ruined castles, convents and humble inns that line the Way of St. James. You can then rest before setting off again the next day.
