Founded by the Arabs, this large village of more than 2,800 inhabitants remains dominated by the castle of the Counts of Oropesa, now transformed into a national parador. The church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Tour, the only vestige of the fortress built by the Knights Templar, is worth mentioning. The village is also famous for its festivities called Los Escobazos. This "festival of brooms", classified as of regional tourist interest, takes place on the night of December 7 and is dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. It reaches its peak when the Virgin's flag is raised, carried by a knight, and when the inhabitants on foot brandish lit broomsticks.
