Located on the cultivated plains between the Tagus and Guadiana rivers, this small town of more than 9,000 inhabitants is home to numerous churches, castles and old stately homes, all arranged around the Plaza Mayor. It offers a pleasant walk. And it is proud to be the cradle of valorous adventurous hidalgos. Francisco Pizarro (founder of Lima in Peru), Francisco de Orellana (who mapped the Amazon), Alonso de Monroy or García de Paredes were also born here. Back from the Americas, they built beautiful palaces and villas that are still the main attraction of the place. The nightly illumination of the Plaza Mayor offers a magnificent spectacle. Trujillo is the birthplace of illustrious people who participated in the discovery of America and is part of the Ruta de los Conquistadores, which passes through other cities of Extremadura, such as Medellín, Villanueva de la Serena... On Easter Sunday, the Shepherds' Festival, called El Chíviri, is celebrated with a folkloric festival and dances in a very good atmosphere, ending with a good meal around the table. A tip to enjoy the visit is to leave the car at the entrance of the old town with its narrow streets, and its historical heart is pedestrian. The Monfragüe National Park, one of the most important protected areas in Extremadura, is located a few kilometers north. It offers a unique landscape of forests, pastures and dams.
