Its heritage makes it one of the most interesting towns in the province. Once dry, its lands have become prosperous and rich in tobacco, cotton and pepper, thanks to the Borbollón and Gabriel y Galán dams. Its main interest is its Gothic and Renaissance cathedral, the episcopal seat. It was built on the ruins of the mosque of Medina Cauria (capital of a Taifa kingdom). The tower, of Churriguera, is characteristic of the influences of the Baroque of Salamanca. In the city there is still a large part of the Roman walls from the Late Period, with different gates, the most outstanding of which is that of La Guía.
