The highest massif in the country and a protected ecological zone where the Mondego and its tributary the Alva spring, the Serra da Estrela is the colour of granite rock, thatch from the roofs of shepherds' huts and sheep's wool, which also provides the milk to make the most famous cheese in Portugal. One enters the serra mainly through Seia, Manteigas (spa), Gouveia or Covilhã (a former textile industrial center and university pole of the region). Don't miss the Zêzere valley, with its stone sheepfolds that blend totally into the landscape. The avid mountain traveller will find his happiness there.
