Located on the banks of the Jerte River, at an altitude of 355 meters, it has more than 39,000 inhabitants. And its old city occupies a strategic position on the Ruta de la Plata, protected behind large gray and golden walls. Inhabited by the Romans and then the Arabs, it was reconquered and repopulated in the 12th century by Alfonso VIII. It was during this period that the city's walls were built and strengthened and the construction of its ancient cathedral began. From the 15th century onwards, the nobility of the region settled in the heart of the city and built many houses, giving it its current appearance. This movement continued until it reached its peak in the 15th and 17th centuries when many of the city's sons left to conquer and evangelize the New World, sometimes returning with their fortunes made. From this period, the city preserves for example the new cathedral or the Palace of the Marquis of Mirabel. Its cathedrals, walls, palaces and stately homes will mark out the visit of this city which deserves to be visited. The other strong attraction is its traditional market dating from the 12th century. It is held every year on the first Tuesday of August and attracts thousands of curious people in the Plaza Mayor. In terms of gastronomy, you can taste the Iberian ham from the dehesa, which has a controlled designation of origin, and you should know that the old town is full of small tapas bars and that you can easily eat at very cheap prices.
