Kalyves, which is reached by leaving the national road at Kalami, is a popular and unfortunately less and less attractive seaside resort because it is very built and visited. Its name(kalyves means "hut") comes from the fact that at the end of the 9th century Arabs would have landed here and built their huts on the beach. Not far from the village stood a Venetian fortress Apicorno, which left its name to the area now called Apokoronas. The most interesting part of the sandy beach is at the very end, towards the east, after the center, just before a small port. However, as is often the case on the northern coast of the Hania region, you only have to leave the sea to discover a preserved, fertile and largely rural hinterland. You will discover the authentic agricultural heart of the region. Explore the surrounding villages and live at a slow pace in the small kafeneia and sleeping squares: Armeni, the incredible and tiny Maheri, Stylos... Only one condition to take these small country roads: be motorized!
