This village founded in 1800 is the capital of Milos. Built on a plateau, hence its name(plaka means flat), the village developed outside the walls of the overhanging kastro, which had become far too narrow to accommodate all the villagers. It extends on the slopes of the hill, joining the villages of Plakes, Triovassalos, Pera Triovassalos and Tripiti and superbly dominating the Aegean Sea which opens towards the west. With a typical Cycladic character, its white houses enclose the hill that its cobbled streets climb up to the kastro. The citadel was built by the Venetians in the 13th century and only a few ruins remain.
