Welcome to Milos! The island's main port, with regular bus connections to the rest of the island. Adamas is a convenient base for discovering the whole island, but not necessarily the most charming for a tourist stay. This is where the island's local and economic life is concentrated, so you can mingle with the island's population. When the Ottoman authorities came to collect taxes, large fires were lit to warn the Milians of the arrival of the ship from Constantinople. Inhabitants would then hide their crops and livestock to avoid looting. Once the ship had left, bonfires were lit in all the villages, and the inhabitants jumped over them, singing: "As the armada goes, so go the shivers". Today, the Kyriavgoustos festival is still celebrated every August 31.
