Nuoro enjoys a picturesque location at the top of a pass at the foot of Mount Ortobene. The modern town is not very welcoming, but you have to persevere to discover a pleasant old town. A mixture of Mediterranean slowness and mountain ruggedness gives Nuoro its typical Barbagian atmosphere. The birthplace of writer Grazia Deledda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, Nuoro is proud of its culture. Corso Garibaldi and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele form the center of the town. Lose yourself in the charming old quarter of San Pietro. Nuoro remains an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region.
