Mamoiada is known for its carnival and its disturbing costumes, and is not particularly interesting outside this period. In February, people come from all over Sardinia to see them. The mamuthones wear a black mask, a thick cape made of animal hair and huge bells weighing up to 50 kg. They transform themselves into strange creatures, half man, half beast. The wooden masks are made by local craftsmen who have been handing down this know-how for generations. You can also buy them from the producers and visit their workshops The tourist office (✆ +39 078 459 0764) is located at number 13 Via Sardegna
