Strahan is a former port designed for the region's logging and mining industry, and many of its improvements (notably the access channel) were carried out in the 19th century by convict labour. Today, it's the starting point for boat tours of Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River, nicknamed the Black River because of the tannins that color the water, and for the tourist train that runs between Strahan and Queenstown. Ocean Beach, 6 km west of the town, is a huge beach stretching more than 30 km to the north. The West Coast Visitor Information Centre is located on The Esplanade, the town's main street.
