The region is famous for its lakes, mountains and numerous hydro-electric dams. Tarraleah is an old village that was created for the construction of one of these dams. Huge penstocks still run down the mountain to feed the power plant that can be seen at the bottom of the valley. Ideally located halfway between Hobart and Strahan, the site is now privately owned by Tarraleah Estate. The executive cottages have been refurbished in keeping with the Art Deco decoration of yesteryear. Hiking, fishing, night wildlife viewing are among the many activities offered to visitors.
