Queenstown, the largest "town" on this western part of the island, was founded after gold was found in the Queen River in 1881. The immediate surroundings were damaged by or for the mining operations and by the sulphurous fumes from the industrial chimneys (now extinguished). The Galley Museum, which recounts the town's mining history, is located at the northern entrance to the town. Queenstown has all the essentials (fuel, supermarket, bank, post office, etc.). The historic railway station and its café are well worth a stop. It's one of the departure points for the Queenstown-Strahan tourist train. From here, take a look at the Empire Hotel (1901).
