Maydena, a dozen kilometers southwest of Mount Field National Park, is the last community of (relative) importance before the Strathgordon Wilderness, 70 km away. In the early 1900s, it was a small settlement near the Adamsfield Osmiridium mining operation. In the 1940s and 1950s, about 100 houses were built for workers at a paper mill. Today, Maydena is home to fewer than 250 residents. Visitors to the national park can find several accommodations here. Part of the disused railroad line is used by Railtrack Riders and their draisines (pedal boats on rails).
