Located 20 km from the main port, it is considered the economic center of Kythera. This traditional village boasts a bazaar that was open during the English occupation and comes alive on Sunday mornings, when the entire population gathers at the market. Paliohora, 9 km east of Potamos, is the ancient capital of Kythera. The ruins of this citadel, founded in the 16th century by Byzantine nobles from Monemvassia and destroyed by Barbarossa in 1537, stand in an impressive landscape. Nearby, the Paleohora Gorge offers great hiking opportunities. They start from the fortress of Aghios Dimitrios and extend to the outskirts of Aghia Pelagia.
