Located 9 kilometers from Corfu, this port was once home to the Venetian navy's arsenal. During the First World War, soldiers from the Kingdom of Serbia landed in the port of Gouvia. Today, yachtsmen prefer to moor opposite in the same bay, near Kondokali beach. Charm is not the main feature of this place. The village of Gouvia is festive, full of beach bars, kitschy tavernas and slightly less expensive resorts that appeal mainly to tourists from Eastern Europe. The town of Kontokali, between Corfu and Gouvia, is famous for its seaside fish tavernas.
