It is here, in the ancient city of Ioulis, that the poets Simonides and Bacchylides were born in the 5th century BC. Situated 5.5 kilometres from Korissia, the capital of the island is distinguished by its neoclassical red-tiled houses, numerous fountains and steep alleys built in amphitheatres on the hillsides. The city centre, which is car-free, is particularly quiet during the week and comes alive at weekends with its many trendy bars and restaurants frequented by wealthy Athenians.
Don't be surprised if you hear about Ioulis, Ioulida, Ioulides or Chora: all these names designate the main village of Kea.
