Welcome to Kea! This is the closest island of the Cyclades to the Greek mainland, which also makes it a favorite weekend destination. It is here that many Athenians disembark with their own cars, which explains why the island is so poorly served by public transportation and poorly provided with rental cars. On the site of the ancient Korissia, the port of Kea is still distinguished by elegant neoclassical houses with red tile roofs. Near Aghios Savas, there are some ruins of the ancient city walls; at the top of the hill of Aghia Triada stood a sanctuary of Apollo. At the base of this hill was discovered the famous Kouros of Kea, which you can see in the archaeological museum of Athens. The bay of Korissia gives access to a group of smaller bays, in the direction of Otzias. Here you will find some nice beaches, including the beach of Gialiskàri, and above all the beautiful fishing port of Vourkari, the center of yacht gathering and the most popular part of the island. The archaeological site of Aghia Irini closes the bay with an interesting peninsula. The American School of Archaeology has discovered a city from the Copper Age. Despite its geographical proximity to the mainland, Kea remains untouched by mass tourism.
