Built in the north-western part of the Thessalian valley, not far from the foothills of the Pindus Mountains, this modern city, with its 40,000 inhabitants, is lively and bustling. The bridge of Lithaios and the Varousi quarter, near the fortress north of the ancient acropolis, are pleasant areas. Kondili and 28-Octovriou streets are full of shops and cafes. The churches of Aghios Dimitrios and Aghiou Anargyrou date from the 16th century and have interesting frescoes. Next to the church of Aghios Konstantinos, there is a mosque built by Sinan Getting there. Trikala is accessible by bus from Thessaloniki and Athens (ktel-trikala.gr) and by train (trainose.gr).
