Its fortress, island, lake and past make Ioannina an obligatory stopover. You will be charmed by the calm that reigns in the small streets of the fortress. Walk along the shore of Lake Pamvotis and enjoy a fish in one of its many taverns... Ioannina is a city where it's good to live. Founded in 527 by the Romans, it passed into the hands of the Normans in 1082, was annexed to the Kingdom of Serbia in 1345, was conquered by the Ottomans in 1430 and was reintegrated into the Kingdom of Greece in 1913, when the country was liberated. It is also worth mentioning the famous figure of Ali Pasha, governor of the region under Ottoman rule, who decided to free himself from the central power, i.e. the Sublime Porte, and to found the autonomous kingdom of Epirus and Albania. On learning of the plot, the sultan sent an army to Ioannina to dislodge Ali Pasha, then a refugee on the island of Lake Pamvotis, and bring back his embalmed head on a silver platter. Today, Ioannina (pronounced "Yanina") is the most important industrial, commercial and cultural centre of Epirus. But it is also a university city whose students contribute to the liveliness of certain neighbourhoods and the existence of a real nightlife Let's go. Accessible by bus (www.ktelioannina.gr) and by plane from Athens (King Pyrros Airport).
