Did you know that? This island, once called "the emerald of the Aegean" because of its abundant greenery, is the northernmost part of Greece. According to mythology, the sirens that tried to enchant Ulysses were on Thassos, and it is not impossible that the enchantment came from the island itself so bewitching is its beauty... Since ancient times, Thassos has been famous for its white marble quarries. Along the road, the white blood of the mountain flows in large, immaculate plates. Despite a large tourist flow, Thassos still has some preserved corners. You will generally arrive in Limenas, its port which is always very lively. The small streets host an impressive number of shops and taverns where travellers crowd. Panaghia, the former capital of the island, a pretty village with typical Macedonian colours and located 7 km south of Limenas, is quieter. In high season, tourist activity is concentrated in Limenaria, 40 km south of Limenas, with superb landscapes and immense beaches of fine sand. It's beautiful... and alive. 60 km south of Limenas, charming and quiet, Theologos is one of the oldest villages on the island. Aliki, finally, is best known for its marble quarries, which exported this precious material throughout the Mediterranean basin. The Parthenon, the Victory of Samothrace, among others, were made with this very pure white marble. To go there. Thassos is connected with the ports of Kavala and Keramoti (10 km from Kavala). The island itself has two ports: Limenas Thassos and Skala Prinos. Information at the port of Kavala (+30 25102 23716 or on www.go-thassos.gr).
