If it knew a strong development until the beginning of the XXth century, the village shelters today beautiful abandoned houses. The name Kontopouli could come from the words "near"(konda) and "city"(polis). It is indeed next door, in the bay of Bournias, that are the ruins of the ancient city of Hephaestus where the god Hephaestus was worshipped: the legend says that he lived as a child in Lemnos and learned there the mastery of fire. Kontopouli also gives access to exceptional natural sites, including the marshy area of Alyki, preserved by the Natura 2000 label and where pink flamingos live, and windy beaches where one can practice kitesurfing and windsurfing.
