Travel Guide Bozcaada - Tenedos

"It was created by God so that man could live longer on this earth. This is how Herodotus speaks of this island of 42 km2. Tenedos, in Turkish Bozcaada, is a Turkish island located in the northern Aegean Sea. It is the third largest Turkish island. Forgotten, even neglected since the beginning of the twentieth century, its traditional economic activities were fishing and viticulture, but in recent years, it makes a spectacular comeback on the national level. Located 29 km from the Dardanelles Strait and 6 km from the docks of Geyikli, a short trip to the islet has become a must among the places to visit. Its fortress, its narrow streets, its old houses, its turquoise blue windows that stand out against the white facades, its restaurants, its vineyards, its sandy beaches and its friendly population are more than enough reasons to attract the sensitive souls. The vineyards of Bozcaada cover 25% of the island's surface. Its wines have been known since ancient times and represent an important part of Turkish wines. Two thirds of the island's inhabitants live from wine growing. Moreover, since a few years, it is possible to stay in vineyard houses.When you arrive from the boat, you might be seized with a doubt when you see the sadness that emanates from the bald hill, peeled by the winds and the few unsightly buildings that loom on the horizon. Be patient... and discover this lost paradise in the Aegean Sea.Being close to the access of the Dardanelles, the Turks became interested in the island after the capture of Constantinople in 1453 and it will be the first island in the Aegean to pass then to the hands of the Turks. Having become independent with the Treaty of Andrinople (1830), Greece occupied the island at the beginning of the First World War, a fact that was not recognized by the Ottoman Empire. The latter having disappeared after the war, the new republic of Atatürk will manage to take it back with the treaty of Lausanne (1923).
