Located about 40 km south of Mytilene, the ouzo capital was founded recently, in the early 1840s. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Plomari was also rich in the production of soap and olive oil. Today, it is still famous for its distilleries, its olive trees and its view of the indigo waters of the Aegean Sea. The old town has preserved neoclassical houses and marble fountains. It is built in an amphitheater in the middle of olive groves and its small port houses taverns and caiques. It is connected several times a week to the port of Izmir, in summer. The place is picturesque with beautiful houses with colorful courtyards, and small squares.
