Volissos is built on a hillside crowned by an imposing Byzantine fortress built by Belisarius, which offers splendid views. It guards the access to the wilderness of northwestern Chios and dominates the small port of Limnia. The myth says that Homer resided here. The area is well known for its leguminous and cereal crops and is also famous for the quality of its figs and almonds. During the Genoese era, the silk industry also flourished, while in more recent times its zinc mines were widely exploited, before being abandoned in the 1960s. Today, this once rich village has kept its charm and its pretty stone houses. You can go for a walk in peace and quiet, stop for a coffee on a small square or come in the evening to enjoy the entertainment at dinner time.In the hot hours, you can go to the sleepy coast around Limnia, especially the small beach of Lefkathia, or the huge bay of Managros. Another option is to take a day trip to Psara, the neighboring island served by the Psara Glory almost every day in season (1h30 crossing). The most curious will push between sea and mountain, on the northwest road, where the landscapes are revealed, solitary, from curve to curve. They will stop at Palia Potamia, a ghost village less known than Anavatos but just as touching.
