Founded in 1042 by Byzantine emperor Constantin Monomachos, it is a particularly important monument whose fabulous golden mosaics are famous. You can also admire the imposing marble table and stone benches in the dining. The monastery is one of the largest Byzantine monuments in Greece and was classified as UNESCO World Heritage in 1990.
