Mesta is full of life in summer. The decorative and sculptural elements of the houses as well as the cobbled floors are all assets of this very well preserved medieval village. One can walk through the labyrinth of alleys to admire the frescoes of the churches of Agia Paraskevi and Agios Giorgos, the iconostasis carved on wood of the old church of Taxiarchis (1412) or the watchtower where the inhabitants took refuge in case of danger. The new church of Megalos Taxiarchis is the largest in Chios. 6 km to the south, the beautiful pebble beaches of Avlonia and Apothika are home to pleasant little cafes.
