Built on the rock, time has left its mark, with its narrow streets and low-slung houses. Perched on the hill of San Giorgio and dominated by the medieval Catholic church of St. George, the island's ancient capital still retains all its charm. Ano Syros was built amphitheatrically to protect itself from pirates. Its houses are built close together to form a defensive fortress, reinforced by stone walls and narrow streets. The blend of Cycladic and medieval architecture is the charm of these narrow streets. But for lack of hotels, you can't sleep here. That's another of its charms.
