The central region of the island of Chios is a mountainous area, sometimes with trees, sometimes with rocks. There are very few inhabited villages in this wild area: Avgonima is an exception. This pretty village located on the mountainous foothills faces the west coast, and the beautiful beaches that dot this corner of the island are protected by medieval watchtowers built by the Genoese. Inland, Avgonima gives access to the ghost village of Anavatos, a real curiosity perched on a rock in the middle of nowhere. Another must-see site in this preserved area is the Byzantine monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
