Modern Avdira (also called Abdera) is a small agricultural village located several kilometers from the coast, 20 km from Xanthi. This village of 2,000 inhabitants is located 9 km from the ancient city of Adera, which was the home of Democritus and Hecatea. The city, which was very important in ancient times, inherited its name from the companion of Hercules, Abdéros, who was torn apart by the wild horses of Diomedes. The numerous Macedonian and neoclassical houses in the square of the present village are worth seeing, as well as the church of Aghia Paraskévi with its 18th century murals. It also gives its name to the nearest beach, which attracts many Greek visitors in summer
