This picturesque fishing village of 500 souls was built on a narrow strip of land between the sea and Lake Vistonida. 24 km south-east of Xanthi, it is a formidable protected site made up of marshes bordering the sea and a lake, a universe of reeds and high grass, territory of an exceptional biotope: nearly 200 000 wild birds take refuge there in winter (storks, sea swallows, wild ducks, herons, pelicans and pink flamingos) Fishermen claim that at the bottom of the sea are sunken ruins not yet discovered. It is in fact the ancient city of Vistonida, capital of King Diomede.
