18 km north of Varna, Zlatni Piassatsi has the largest beach area in the entire northern coastline. In Ottoman times, the site was called Uzunkum (the Long Sands). Today, its Bulgarian name means "Golden Sands". The construction of the resort, which began in the 1950s, is still going on. The abundant vegetation and the limestone soil create a striking natural landscape, but the asphalt roads and massive settlements greatly deteriorate its natural beauty. People come here for the beach tourism and the nightlife, which is as lively as its southern counterpart, Sunny Beach.
