If the most brilliant capital of the first Bulgarian Empire, called "Danube Bulgaria", was Preslav, its very first was Pliska, before a pagan and noble revolt pushed the khan to move his court to Preslav. Pliska is a national, archaeological and cultural heritage site and is one of the hundred listed monuments in the country. The ruins of the ancient city are impressive, some buildings (the walls and the church) have been very well preserved; for the others, the foundations give an idea of the complex. Pliska was founded by the Khan Asparouh in 681; Simeon I the Great made Preslav his capital.
