This village of 3,000 inhabitants is well worth a visit, for its architecture, its costumes, its wooden porches... Isolated from the main roads, it gives the impression of a place frozen in time, where traditional practices and trades endure. Its Sfântul Nicolae-Josani church is one of eight listed by Unesco. Dating from 1643, it is one of the oldest in Maramureș. It was painted in 1762 by Alexandru Ponehalski, then in 1832 by Ioan Opriș, in a Baroque style. It houses a fine collection of icons on glass and wood, as well as a coat of mail that belonged to Pintea Viteazul, a sort of local Robin Hood.
