Halfway between Veliko Tarnovo and Varna, we will see Choumen (90,000 hab) by far by his scary communist monument of "1,300 years of Bulgarian history", which is hardly engaging! Although it is primarily a socialist silhouette, in the heart of a forest of concrete bars, Choumen is not an uninteresting step. Its city center is pleasant, some monuments worthy of interest, including the largest mosque in Bulgaria. The fortress and the monument evoked are also interesting visits, as well as the rider of Madara nearby, main attraction of the region. Choumen is also known for her beer since she opened the first brewery in 1882.History. Choumen was built on the remains of the bronze age, a thrace bourgade, and Roman and Byzantine constructions. The city was already important in the Middle Ages, as its fortress proves, but it was the Turks who intensified the development of Choumla, which they gave to the city. Renamed Choumen later, the city was illustrated in the 19 th century during the Bulgarian Revival by becoming an important artisanal center. On May 22, 1813, the first public celebration of the festival of Saints Cyrille and Method, creators of the Slavic alphabet (now national day, May 24), was held at the same time as the first theater representation in Bulgaria. Thanks to the influence of the Hungarian revolutionaries, the first Bulgarian symphony orchestra was created in 1851. Great Bulgarian characters come from Choumen like the writers Dobri Voïnikov, Vassil Droumev, Sava Dobroplodni (playwright), Panaïot Volov (revolutionist).
