The modern Veliki Preslav is spread on both banks of the river Titcha. Nearby, one can visit the imposing ruins of Preslav, capital of the first Bulgarian Empire (893-972), whose most impressive building is the church. Throughout the 10th century, it was probably the most important city in the Balkans, the focus of spiritual and intellectual life, before falling under Byzantine rule in the 11th and 12th. In 1388, it was taken and destroyed by the Turks, who even used the stones of the city to build the mosques in Shoumen. The vestiges enclosed in the historical reserve are one of the must-sees of the area.
