Population approx. 20,000. Prekmurje's largest town has existed since 1366. It grew up around an ancient manor house and the present-day castle. Between the two world wars, the town acquired an industrial infrastructure and took on a more urban appearance. In 1919, the town experienced a boom with the proclamation of the Socialist Republic of Murska. Masters of the site for nine centuries, the Hungarians tried to break the revolutionary wave. But to no avail. A year later, Murska Sobota became part of the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. However, the town's lacklustre architecture is unlikely to leave a lasting impression on wandering minds.
