Population approx. 40,000. Nicknamed "the Second Troy", the ancient colony of Celeia became one of the most important cities in the Noric province under Emperor Claudius. The road linking Emona (Ljubljana) to Pannonia passed through here. Trade did the rest. It was also the seat of the last historical Slovenian state before independence, in the Middle Ages, under the aegis of the Counts of Celje. Today, the city's influence is felt throughout the region, thanks to a well-renewed city center, top-quality museums, a castle that keeps a watchful eye on the city's glorious past, a top-level handball club and an exceptional nearby natural environment.
