Population approx. 21,500. At the center of the lower Savinja valley (Spodnja Savinjska dolina) and surrounded by hills through which the Savinja river flows, Žalec was first mentioned in 1182 and was soon recognized as a trading center. Remains of the town's past can be seen in the buildings at the heart of the well-preserved town, such as the 16th-century Zotlova Domačija or the 1669 Širčeva Domačija, also known as Savin's House, the birthplace of Slovenian composer Risto Savin. Driven by hop-growing, tourism has grown considerably following the inauguration of a self-service beer fountain in 2016.
