With its 19,000 inhabitants on 245 km2, this small town built on the site of an ancient Roman camp is the most important in the Vipava valley. Today, only one of the original fifteen towers remains, which stands to the north of the city. Ajdovščina experienced an industrial boom after 1945 thanks to the development of the food industry. The company Fructal, which produces fruit juices distributed throughout the country, and Mlinotest, a pasta producer, are located here. The city is the home of the baroque painter Anton Cebej, and also has a gallery dedicated to the work of Veno Pilon, a painter and photographer who lived in Paris.
