About 33,000 inhabitants. This is a so-called "socialist" town, with its characteristic blocks of flats. The economic, cultural and administrative center of the Saleška valley, the town became Slovenia's main coal-mining site in the 1950s. Numerous factories were built here in record time. Velenje may not attract your attention except to visit its castle, explore the Saleška valley or stay at the Topolsica thermal baths. However, Velenje's economic dynamism is demonstrated by the presence of the leading household appliance company Gorenje, which employs over 6,000 people here.
