This small town in north-eastern Slovenia has a population of around 14,000. Situated below Mount Koncije and the wine-growing hills of Skalce, it is mentioned in texts as early as 1146. The town played a leading role in the peasant revolt of 1515 against the Habsburgs, although this did not have a major impact. It deserves to be given more attention in terms of tourism, as it is packed with exciting places to visit. These include, of course, the pleasant town center, the ancient castle and, above all, the Zice monastery, built by twelve French Carthusian monks, which alone is worth a visit.
