Gurk is known as the religious centre of Carinthia and is a major place of pilgrimage for its cathedral. The cathedral, a three-winged building built in the second half of the 12th century, is one of the most beautiful Romanesque monuments in Austria. Its crypt, with its hundred columns, is particularly impressive. The cathedral has many carved elements: the Samson Gate from 1180, panels from the 16th century illustrating the life of St Emma, the altar from the 17th century, and a Baroque lectern from 1740. The Bishop's Chapel is decorated with beautiful wall paintings dating from the Romanesque period.
